Things to Know in Paris
Small things that make a week in Paris go smoothly.
- Say "Bonjour" before anything else. Walking into a shop, a bakery, a pharmacy, approaching anyone on the street. Say it first, every time.
- Skipping it reads as rude in a way that is hard to recover from. Saying it changes the entire interaction.
- After dark it becomes "Bonsoir."
- When you leave, "Merci, au revoir."
- The currency is the euro.
- Cards are accepted almost everywhere and contactless tap works on nearly every terminal. Carry 20 to 40 euros in cash for small bakeries, markets and restrooms.
- Service is included by law. You will see "service compris" on the bill. There is no expectation of a 20 percent tip.
- Rounding up is the norm. Leave one or two euros for a coffee, five to ten for a good dinner. That is generous, not stingy.
- Tip your private driver five to ten euros if you want to. It is not required.
- Use bank ATMs, not the standalone machines in tourist areas. Always decline the "convert to dollars" option at the terminal.
- Charles de Gaulle-Étoile is a three minute walk from the hotel and serves metro lines 1, 2 and 6 plus RER A.
- Tap your phone or contactless card directly on the turnstile. No ticket needed. Or buy a Navigo Easy card at any station.
- Line 1 runs the length of the Champs-Élysées to the Louvre. Line 6 takes you to the Eiffel Tower and crosses the Seine above ground.
- Keep your ticket until you exit. Inspectors do check and the fine is immediate.
- Uber and Bolt both work well. Taxis from the street are fine but ask the fare range first.
- Never cross the Arc de Triomphe traffic circle on foot. Use the underground passage on the Champs-Élysées side.
- Lunch service runs roughly noon to 2:30 PM. Dinner rarely starts before 7:30 PM and 8:30 is normal.
- Many kitchens close between services. If you are hungry at 4:00 PM, look for a café or a brasserie, which serve all day.
- Ask for "une carafe d'eau" and you get free tap water. Otherwise you are buying bottled.
- The check does not come until you ask. Say "l'addition, s'il vous plaît." Sitting untouched for 30 minutes is not bad service, it is politeness.
- Sunday and Monday are the common closing days. Check before you walk somewhere.
- Reserve anything you actually care about. The concierge at the hotel will call for you.

- Paris is safe. The real risk is pickpocketing, not violence.
- The hot spots are exactly where you will be: metro line 1, the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and Montmartre.
- Wear bags crossbody with the zipper facing in. Front pockets only. Nothing in a back pocket.
- Common approaches: someone insisting you sign a petition, someone tying a friendship bracelet on your wrist near Sacré-Cœur, someone "finding" a gold ring at your feet. All of them are distractions. Keep walking and say nothing.
- On crowded metro cars, keep a hand on your bag.
- If something happens, dial 112. Operators speak English.

- Pharmacies show a green cross. Pharmacists in France are trained to advise and can handle most minor issues without a doctor.
- US Embassy Paris, 2 Avenue Gabriel, 75008, +33 1 43 12 22 22. About a 15 minute walk from the hotel.
- Carry any prescription medication in its original labeled bottle.
- France charges 20 percent VAT, and as non-EU visitors you can reclaim a portion of it.
- You need to spend at least 100 euros in a single store on the same day.
- Ask for the "détaxe" form or "bordereau" at checkout and show your passport. Carry your passport on shopping day.
- Keep the goods unused, the receipts, and the forms together.
- At CDG on departure day, find the PABLO kiosks and scan your forms BEFORE you check your bags or clear security.
- Expect to recover roughly 12 percent of the purchase price after processing fees.
- Build in an extra 45 minutes at the airport for this. It is the single most common thing travelers forget.
- September in Paris runs roughly 70°F in the day and 55°F at night, with occasional rain. A light layer and a compact umbrella cover it.
- Plugs are Type E, 230V. Bring a universal adapter.
- Parisians dress up more than Americans do. Clean, fitted, dark colors. Sneakers are fine, athletic wear is not.
- Public restrooms are scarce. Cafés expect you to buy something first. Department stores and museums are your best bet.
- Buy an eSIM before you fly or turn on your carrier's international plan. Hotel WiFi is free but the metro is not covered.
- Download an offline Paris map before you land.
- Most shops close Sunday. The Champs-Élysées, the Marais and Galeries Lafayette are the exceptions.
